Functions of Answer Helmets
Date Added: April 28, 2011 04:24:34 AM

Answer helmets can be defined as a type of protective head gear used by racers, cyclists or riders. The main function of a helmet is to give your head protection during an impact. There are many helmet types which can also serve other important functions like intercom, ear protection, face shields and ventilation.

Being a modern brand, answer helmets are constructed from premium materials like fiberglass, toughened with Kevlar or carbon fiber. The inner part is also constructed with padded materials and fabrics to offer both comfort and protection. However, if you want the best protection, make sure you replace your helmet following an impact. The liner crushes during an impact. So it will increase the time, distance and period over which the head stops its deceleration.

The outer shell is designed with thickness of fiber materials which acts as a cushion in case of an accident. Answer helmets give more density to the outer shell to give you better protection. Many of the premium materials used do not crush easily following a crash. You may find the outer part undamaged only to find the inner padding of the EPS crushed.

Basically, the outer shell serves these purposes in helmet functions.

• To prevent sharp and hard objects lying around the crash site from penetrating the helmet.

• The foam used to make the inner padding has little resistance to abrasion or penetration. This is where the outer part comes in again. To give the inner part a structure so that it does not disintegrate upon an abrasive contact.

For you to perfectly understand how answer helmets function, you have to first understand head injury mechanism. When many people think of a helmet, the one thing that comes to their minds is that the helmet will save their lives preventing their heads from splitting open. This is not the case. For one, skull fractures are not as life threatening as you think. They can only be categorized as life threatening if the fracture is depressed or impinges on the brain. Remember, bone fractures tend to heal after a short period of time.

So, basically, what you need to worry about is brain injuries as they are very serious. In many cases, they may be fatal, lead to a permanent disability or alter your life in one way or another. The brain has very limited ability to recover following any type of injury. In general, the main function of answer helmets is to protect you from traumatic brain injuries. Injuries to other parts of your head like the skull and face are a secondary concern.

So, to fully protect yourself from injuries that may be fatal, go for answer helmets meant for a particular activity and age. The helmet you use for riding your bicycle will function well if used for snowmobiles as they have not been designed for that particular activity. Also, go for steady, strong, durable, comfortable and safe helmets.
