| | ArticlesWhat Are Some Potential Yasmin Side Effects? Date Added: May 28, 2011 10:16:32 AM | Yasmin is a fourth generation birth control that is touted as being one of the best new hormonal birth control options on the market. It is the generic version of the birth control Yaz, and is more affordable than the other option. It’s also a very popular birth control option, especially among younger women. According to the commercials, Yasmin can actually reduce PMS symptoms and treat major premenstrual problems and disorders.
The problem, though, is that some consumers get caught up in the idea of this perfect low dose birth control and forget to ask what the potential Yasmin side effects are. For this reason, some women have suffered from serious and unexpected problems because of this birth control. Because of this, some women are seeking to take legal action against the manufacturers of Yasmin, who, they say, didn’t give them adequate warning of the potential side effects of this form of birth control.
Yasmin and Blood Clots
One of the major Yasmin side effects is blood clots. Clots can be simply painful and annoying if you catch them soon enough and can treat them properly. However, they can also cause potentially life threatening conditions, such as strokes and heart attacks. Like most newer birth controls, Yasmin carries a heightened risk of blood clots because of the specific hormones it uses in its formulation compared to some older hormonal birth control options. These hormones combined mean that this particular type of medication can cause the blood to start sticking together, blocking up the veins.
When blood completely blocks up veins, it is usually known as deep vein thrombosis. These veins, normally in the legs, can get swollen and tender. They are more easily infected. If circulation is blocked for long enough, the oxygen-poor blood in the veins can start causing cell death. Eventually, cell death leads to tissue death, which can lead to gangrene and, eventually, amputation.
Yasmin and Gallbladder Disease
Another of the major Yasmin side effects to be concerned with is that of gallbladder disease. This medication actually increases blood levels of cholesterol and slows the functioning of the gallbladder. These two things together mean that more gallstones are likely to form. When gallstones form, they could be totally asymptomatic, or they could cause serious problems.
For instance, gallstones could block the bile ducts in the gallbladder. This can cause serious digestive issues, and it can cause the gallbladder to become infected. If the infection can’t be treated with medication, the gallbladder may need to be removed. While you can function without a gallbladder, your body will forever have trouble breaking down fats in foods, which means that you will be on a restricted diet for life.
What to Do
If you or someone you love has suffered from these Yasmin side effects, you may need to contact a lawyer immediately. Yasmin litigation is ongoing in many states, and many other women and their families are fighting for their rights against the manufacturers of this birth control.
